This conference is dedicated to artists' approaches to the figure of the mother.

A fundamental motif in the history of art, the mother has never ceased to be represented in contemporary art, as the primary mirror of both the self and the world around us. Inspired by the exhibition À partir d'elle. Artists and their mothers (2024, Le Bal, Paris), this exploration of maternal territory looks at filiation as a way of rethinking archetypal relationships, between social criticism, the quest for self, conjuration and appeasement. The mother appears as a figure of access to the world, of play and identification, but also of loss and nostalgia.
