In ancient times – so ancient that nobody can remember them – in the heart of a remote, arid desert, there was a village whose inhabitants had no heads. The men toiled hard on barren land from morning till night, struggling to feed their ever-growing families. The women never left their homes. They stayed there to look after the children whilst continuing to bring more children into the world… Often twins, triplets… Sometimes even more… The newborns resembled those already born: they were born without heads… And this had been going on for so long that the elders said ‘since time immemorial’. One day, a woman from the village, already a mother several times over, gave birth to a little boy. And he had a head! Terrified, she ran to hide the child away from prying eyes and waited anxiously for her husband to return so she could tell him the news. That evening, her husband found his wife in tears. Worried, he asked her, ‘Why are you crying, my wife?’ Unable to hold back her tears, she took his hand and pulled him towards the room where she had hidden the child, repeating between her increasingly loud sobs: ‘Sar… Sar… Sardar’
