Imagine for a moment that the Mongolian steppes are right here at home.
There, traditional music is intertwined with the environment and the nomadic way of life. Within a soundscape, the Mongolians engage in a dialogue with nature, whether through their instruments – such as the horse-head fiddle, the morin khuur, or the lute, the tovshuur – or through their voices, in the form of hymns or overtone singing.
Nemekhbayar YADMAA, a master of the art, hails from the Altai region, the cradle of Mongolian overtone singing, known as khöömii. He and Johanni CURTET, a specialist in this technique in the West, bring this nomadic culture to life through a journey far beyond the mountains, into the wide open spaces.
A unique encounter between a Mongolian artist and a French ethnomusicologist in search of harmonic sounds, brought together by the art of khöömii.
