Between reflection and transparency, how can we capture the elusive? A lecture exploring the theme of water – both a technical challenge and a fascinating motif that serves as a captivating visual interface.

How have artists depicted bodies in water, and to what end? This lecture invites you to delve into the subject in a variety of ways: to share in the mythological bathing of the gods, to explore age-old ritual ablutions, to view bathing through the intimate lens of the concepts of cleanliness, beauty and hygiene, and also to examine the architecture of public baths, places of wellbeing and socialising. Not to mention depictions of sea bathing and leisure swimming, which have been a firm favourite with artists!
