LE SIXIEME PION

An adventure for the whole family!

On 19 March 2026, a new chess piece was discovered by an archaeologist following excavations carried out at the castle
of Mayenne. Other archaeological objects relating to the game have been found in the castle in the past. These discoveries are causing
scientists to question the function of the five other character-shaped pieces in the museum’s collection. Were they
really used to play chess? Perhaps not?

Throughout December, with the help of “La Science entre en Jeu”, the museum is organising a major citizen science campaign in which everyone is invited to help advance the research. Scientists need to collect as much data as possible to validate their theories about these game pieces. Young and old alike are invited to come and play a scientific game that’s as serious as it is fun!
